In Champéry, a trip underground is also worthwhile. The salt mine of Bex consists of an extensive labyrinth of galleries, shafts, stairs and halls, more than 50 km long. Let yourself be drawn into the spell of this fascinating underworld and learn the secrets of salt extraction, which have been used here since 1684. An experience with guaranteed memory value for young and old.

An underground natural spectacle is also the lake of St-Léonard. It is located between Sion and Sierre, in the heart of the Valais Alps and at a depth of 30 to 70 meters below the vineyards. With a length of 300 meters, it is the largest natural navigable underground lake in Europe. Guided tours in rowing boats offer insight into this fascinating universe.

Of course, the Portes du Soleil region also offers countless opportunities for active recreation above ground, both in winter and summer. And if the weather is not ideal for outdoor activities, we recommend a visit to Chaplin's World. Explore the family life of legendary artist Charlie Chaplin on a tour of the rooms of the beautiful mansion in Vevey.

The Rosswald sun terrace above Brig is the perfect starting point for long walks and hikes. A visit to the car-free, family-friendly area is worthwhile for the fantastic view of the Valais and Bernese Alps alone. If you like extra sports, take the bike up to the Rosswald. The effort is worth it! For all others, in summer and winter, the cable car is at your disposal.

If you plan your stay in Valais towards the end of August, you must not miss the "Schäful". On the last weekend in August, the sheep that have spent the summer on the Belalp make their way home to the valley. For visitors:inside a reason to celebrate. In addition to traditional fare, a cozy get-together with atmospheric music is the order of the day.

Another seasonal highlight is the saffron harvest in Mund in October. Mund is the only place in Switzerland where, according to centuries of tradition, the precious spice is still planted today. The saffron nature trail offers an entertaining hiking opportunity in the most beautiful nature. And if you want to learn even more about the culinary specialty, visit the small and fine saffron museum, which is located in probably one of the oldest wooden buildings in Switzerland.

The Lötschental is truly a magical valley, rich in exciting legends, extraordinary traditions and customs, a unique mountain-valley panorama and the most beautiful valley end of the Alps. The Lötschentaler Höhenweg combines all these components and is therefore one of the really great and well-known high-altitude trails in the Valais. Situated at an altitude of mostly 1,800 to 2,100 m above sea level, it offers a magical panorama of the Lötschental. The hiking trail leads through wildly romantic forests and alpine meadows and offers idyllic picnic spots to relax at the picturesque Schwarzsee. The entire high-altitude trail leads from Jezinen in the Rhone Valley via Lauchernalp to Fafleralp, with most hikers taking the part between Lauchernalp and Fafleralp under their feet.

Far less touristy, but no less worth experiencing is the hike through the Chaschtlerwald to the Gattunalp, which offers a perfect habitat for native animals and plants and presents itself in a correspondingly natural way. Especially on hot summer days, an excursion to this (shady) side of the Lötschental is a special pleasure.

If you like it really sporty, set out on the Lötschental 5 Lakes Tour. This tour combines all the beauties that make this magical valley so special. Wild nature as far as the eye can see. Past grazing cows, sheep and goats, and if you're lucky, you might even spot some alpine animals like chamois, ibex and marmots. If the whole hike is too strenuous for you, you can limit yourself to visiting 3 or 4 lakes.
